A-Level Government & Politics and History students visit the Houses of Parliament

Report by A-Level student Anastasia

Last term, the college organised a trip to the Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster. Westminster is the meeting point of the House of Commons and the House of Lords of the UK. I was impressed by the magnificence of the architecture of the building, which although rebuilt and restored, has preserved its eminence.

We first visited the Great Hall, the oldest part of the Palace, which shocks tourists with its immensity. The tour guide took us to see both the Lords Chamber and the Commons Chamber that are quite different from one another.

The Lords Chamber is the most lavishly-decorated room in the Palace of Westminster. It has the grandest interior because it is where the three elements of Parliament (the Sovereign, the Lords and the Commons) come together.  The seats in the Chamber are red which gives the room a curious atmosphere of a heated debate. The Commons Chamber looks very different to that of the Lords. It is definitely less decorated but still maintains the principles of a debate chamber. Here, the seats are green. In both rooms there are TVs, cameras and microphones that look rather out of place in the historical surroundings, however they signify the contemporaneity of the Houses of Parliament.

We also saw the Members’ Lobby where statues of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher are located.

Overall the tour was extremely beneficial. It gave us an expanded insight into the historical aspects of UK Parliament and how it functions.
