Cancellation of Summer Exams

Cancellation of Summer Exams

Dear Parents, Agents, and Guardians,

I promised to inform you as soon as we had any clarification from the Department for Education here about examinations this summer. I am happy to tell you that we have just received some clarification.

As you know, the Government has cancelled plans for formal exams. Instead, colleges and schools will be able to indicate to educational authorities which grades students should have been expected to get if they had sat A-Levels or GCSEs. This indication will, we are told, be based on a figure backed by performances in mock examinations, coursework, classroom work, and school assessments. You can read the Government press statement here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/further-details-on-exams-and-grades-announced

The government body, OfQual (Her Majesty’s Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) will now talk to the examinations boards, and will set out a clear process telling us how in what fashion we can issue grades. When that advice comes to us, I will convey it to you. What is now very clear to me is that students who have completed a course, and who are in good standing with regard to fees, still have the next term to add to our marks and assessments, online or via work set and done at home and sent to us, in addition to all their hard work so far. If there is at the end of that process any disagreement with the grades which we release, then students will have a chance to sit examinations later to prove what grade they would have got in exam conditions. This will not be a requirement, and indeed, it is probably safe to say that it will not happen very much at all.

As you know, college has closed to students today, and we are moving online. The staff and I will be able to answer your questions, however, as and when we receive them electronically. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone good health, and a safe and secure time at home, and I hope that students have checked and re-checked their Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom for next week. If not, please contact teachers and personal tutors directly, or myself with details. For administration purposes, please email clientservices@cic.ac

With very best wishes,

Dr Martin Meenagh

Principal
